Conversation 1 (In-Person) – Wednesday evenings
Conversation 1 is the best way to improve oral fluency through conversational practice.
Teachers will bring new topics to discuss every week and will prompt the conversation in different ways such as a selection of guided conversations in Italian, questions, and brief exercises relating to contemporary Italy, taken from different sources (short readings, websites, videos, music, etc.) that will help you to gain more self-confidence.
Spoken accuracy and fluency are the focus of this course, but the teacher will signal and correct the main grammar mistakes too and will be at the student’s disposal in case there is a need to clarify some concepts to improve learners’ accuracy while speaking.
Completion of the Beginner 3 Course is recommended.
What you will learn
- Students will expand their vocabulary in a way that will benefit both general conversation and discussion of specific topics
- Students will familiarize themselves with a variety of current issues relating to Italy
- Students will develop their communicative skills in Italian through discussion of several topics, ranging from social and political issues to media, pop culture, films, music, fashion, food, and sports

Sonia Dal TortoSonia Del Torto is a Sessional Instructor in the Department of World Languages and Literatures at Simon Fraser University and serves as Learning & Development Specialist and Teaching Coordinator at La Scuola, the Italian language school of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada-West. At La Scuola, she oversees educational strategy and curriculum development, designs and delivers educational programs, and coordinates and mentors a team of instructors.
Sonia has taught Italian in Vancouver since 2018, working across university and private language-school settings. Her work focuses on Italian language education, curriculum development. She has also developed interdisciplinary educational projects exploring Italian literature, history, and culture.
She holds a Master’s degree in International Cooperation and Protection of Human Rights and has a professional background in project management, grant writing, and intercultural education, with experience developing initiatives focused on inclusion, education, youth, and community development.

Stefano Dal FarraBorn and raised in a small town in the North-East of Italy, Stefano studied Cultural and Linguistic Mediation at the University of Udine and obtained a master’s degree in project management and European Studies as part of the Erasmus Mundus Program. He worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Ottawa and as an Italian teacher for foreigners, immigrants, asylum seekers and Erasmus+ volunteers in Italy for more than 2 years. His passion for travelling and exploring the world, made him interested in learning new languages and discovering new cultures, as well as sharing and conveying his mother tongue and culture to other people. Thanks to his experience in the Erasmus+ Program for non-profit associations in more than 25 projects as project coordinator, content manager, youth trainer and group facilitator for intercultural groups, he masters good expertise on content creating, teaching, team building, group dynamics, soft skills, communication and intercultural dialogue.
